A Fair Fee?
A Fair Fee? — Ask politely why an overdue fee was charged and clarify the dates or item details behind it.
A charge you weren’t expecting
You return a book to your local library and notice a small overdue fee on your account. You are fairly sure you put the book in the return slot before the due date, but you do not want to sound accusatory. Your aim is to understand what happened, find out what you can do next, and ask for a review if the record does not look right. In this lesson, notice how speakers ask for information before challenging a decision. Phrases such as “Could you tell me…?” and “Would it be possible to…?” leave room for the other person to explain and often sound more constructive than a direct demand.

Read the account notice
Example account notice > Your account shows an overdue fee of £1.50 for The Glass Shore. The item was due on 12 May and checked in on 15 May. A second item, Small Hours, is still on loan and is due on 20 May. You can return it at the desk or use the library return slot. Fees can be paid online or in person. If you believe an account entry is incorrect, please contact the service desk so we can review it. The notice gives a reason for the fee, but the dates are still worth checking if they do not match your memory. “Shows” describes what the account currently records; it does not prove that the record is correct. A calm first step is to ask how the fee was calculated and request a check of the relevant entry.
Useful desk-side language
A constructive way to raise a problem
In many English-speaking service settings, people often start by describing what they have noticed and asking for an explanation before saying that something is wrong. For example, “I’ve noticed a fee on my account. Could you explain how it was calculated?” is clear without blaming the staff member. This is a useful conversational approach, not a rule that everyone follows. If you have evidence of a different return date, give the detail calmly and ask whether the record can be checked.
