Experiences and Details

Experiences and Details — Use the present perfect to introduce travel experiences without saying exactly when they happened.

Notice the difference

Marta is talking to a colleague about travel. She says, “I’ve been to Portugal twice.” She is introducing a life experience, so the exact time is not important. Her colleague asks, “When did you go?” Marta answers, “I went last summer and in 2023.” Once she gives a finished time, she uses the past simple. Notice the pattern: present perfect for the experience; past simple for the details.
